O. Henry House

601 Dolorosa STREET

This small vernacular house, once a common type in San Antonio, may be the city’s most oft-moved historic structure. Originally built at 904 South Presa Street, it was home in the 1890s to the writer William Sydney Porter (O. Henry), who also maintained an office within for his publication Rolling Stone. Threatened with demolition in 1959, the house was sold for $1 to the San Antonio Conservation Society, which in turn sold it to the Lone Star Brewery, which moved it to the Lone Star grounds for display.  When the brewery closed, the house was relocated back near downtown to this corner, restored and reopened in 1999.
